May There Be Gardens!

What is it?

May 2007 Day of the Bed (17)

On Saturday, May 7, 2016, 11 teams from our community joined us for the 10th annual May There Be Gardens! (formerly Day of the Bed). Together we built 11 Kitchen Garden Project gardens in a single morning! We are thankful to our build teams from The Brotherhood LoungeOlympia Food Co-OpWest Olympia RotarySlow Food Greater Olympia, Washington Service Corps, Girl Scouts, the Thurston County Office of Assigned CounselYWCA of Olympia, and the GRuB School Alumni, and GRuB Board of Directors for their participation and hard work.

We are also thankful to the following local businesses for all of their support and donations, helping raise a total of $7,084 to cover the cost of 15 backyard gardens: The Ramblin Restaurant GroupThe Fresh ApproachBlue Heron BakerySan Francisco Street BakerySullivans’ Homestead at the Olympia Farmers MarketRising River FarmKirsop FarmOlympia Food Co-Op, StarbucksFiddlie-I-Ay for the amazing entertainment, and Jo Arlow Photography for capturing the event!

The Day of the Bed first began in 2007 as the brainchild of our then AmeriCorps Backyard Garden Coordinator, Stephanie Snyder (who founded the awesome KGP-inspired Just Garden Project in King County). In an effort to build greater community participation while raising funds for KGP and celebrating all of our garden builds, she had the idea to build 10 gardens in one day at the end of the build season. We pulled together as an organization to find volunteer build teams who would also raise funds to sponsor the costs of the gardens they’d be building as well as additional funding for the larger KGP program. Day of the Bed has operated in one form or another each spring since then with different KGP staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers putting their own twists on it.

In May 2017, the Kitchen Garden Project will be hosting our 11th annual May There Be Gardens! celebration.  With the support of fantastic Garden Build Teams, we will once again mobilize our greater community to install 10 (or more) gardens in one day, and raise money to fund these food-producing, hunger-reducing backyard gardens.
